I love being able to say that I live in the oldest house in Venice.

When I moved in, there wasn’t even an opening in the curb for the driveway.  Needless to say, a lot has changed since then.  Come to think of it, a lot has changed since these photos were taken too!

Too see more of Andreas von Einsiedel’s beautiful photographs, check out the project on my Houzz.com profile.

In my last entry, The Trocadéro dream-flat, I referenced Eileen Gray’s Transat armchair (shown above.)  I have such respect for the chair and its brilliant creator that I will give it a little spin-off post.

One of the true masters of furniture: Gray’s body of work and recognition were compromised by the gender inequality of her era.  This chair was conceived for the brilliantly relaxed 1920s house, E 1027, she designed with her boyfriend Jean Bodaovici on the French Riviera (shown below.)

My designer friends have probably already seen French designer François Champsaur’s recent apartment interior in the Trocadéro neighborhood of Paris, but it features two furniture makers that deserve a mention so I am posting it anyway.

In we go!

The shelves were designed by Champsaur for Pouenat

The dining table and bench are designed by Christian Liaigre (below) paired with LC8 stool from Cassina.  The light fixture is by Lindsey Adelman, the fittings are by Dornbracht, the countertops on the custom cabinetry are by Bulthaup, and one wall is sheathed in Carrara marble

Shown above is the Infante lounge chair designed by Liaigre.

Back to the apartment…

The wonderful arts education organization of which I am a proud board member: Inner-City Arts will be throwing its annual summer party on July 25th!  The effect I have seen their programs have on children and educators continues to inspire me.  And they’re not messing around with the food, wine, and entertainment either!  Check out this link and the flyer for delicious details (Guerrilla Tacos, Salt & Straw Ice Cream, Silver Lake Wine, and more!) and please share with others.

It will be a night to remember!

All proceeds support free arts education for underserved youth.

It is with a heavy heart but a joyful spirit of what is to come that we saw the closing of AXE on Abbot Kinney in Venice. After 15 years of making everyone’s life a good deal more delicious and connected to the Mother earth the last pancake was rationed out. This iconic restaurant has inspired legions of designers, chefs and foodies alike, we know who we are.

Now it is time for us who have had the privilege of having it at our doorstep for over a decade to share the good that we have learned and fed on.

In the meantime we will patiently await the 9 grain pancake and the granola and  chai tea which have no match, in the hope that they will be reincarnated elsewhere in some other format.

We will  all be following carefully to see where this magic happens next! Venice thanks you!

Centuries Ahead

Iznik tiles themselves are treasures. For this rare collection of furniture  they were custom made in a scale that has never been executed before.

Iznik tile from Turkey is a tradition originating in the 12th century and is remarkable most notably for the quartz content from which the body of the tiles are made. On top of this than comes the exquisite hand painted artistry of the Iznik craftsman. Each table is designed to be an extension of the motif in the tile itself.

Each of the hand-crafted tables is made by an artisan, a master craftsman, one wood worker and one bronze caster, both California based.

Centuries Ahead was formed to create treasures  of museum quality for our time and of the future…
